The Alton Oakham Victorian greenhouse is part of the Alton Evolution range of Victorian greenhouses. This dwarf wall model is designed for a 750mm high brick wall, it is 10' 9" wide and is constructed throughout with Western Red Cedar and includes high eaves (5' 7") for extra headroom inside your greenhouse. Toughened safety glass, guttering and downpipes, automatically opening roof vents and Cedar bar capping are all included throughout as standard.
Alton Greenhouses have invested heavily in CNC machinery to ensure that your greenhouse has highly accurate joints - and this really shows in the quality of the product. Advances in machinery and technology have enabled for the first time, a fully flat-packed greenhouse which actually takes no longer to assemble than the old-style fully glazed panel models. Evolution Victorian models come with a Cedar capping system to retain the glass. You can upgrade this to an aluminium system which is coated in an attractive powder-coated Moss colour. This makes your greenhouse virtually maintenance free!
What's Included with your Alton Oakham Dwarf Wall Greenhouse?
Western Red Cedar
Western Red Cedar is famed for its extraordinary durability and resistance to decay. It has a pleasing aromatic odour and is treated with a natural preservative oil which protects against the elements.
Cedar Bar Capping

Five Reasons Why The Evolution Victorian Models Are Even Stronger:
More Wood
Over the years greenhouses made from both aluminium and cedar have become thinner to save costs, after studying the process from raw material through to delivery the team at Alton discovered that a large part of the costs came from double handling, storage and distribution costs. After streamlining this process Alton have been able to add much thicker glazing bars based on 44 x 44 timbers or 44 x 69 in places giving you a truly robust greenhouse.
A New Bar Capping System
Normally a wooden greenhouse will have its glass held in place with a beading or groove cut into the wood. The result of this can lead to the glass rattling in the frame. The Alton Evolution Victorian bar capping system uses the toughened glass as part of the greenhouse's overall strength by gripping the glass tightly, preventing the glass from rattling and giving a far stronger frame. A cedar bar capping is included as standard on these models, but an aluminium upgrade is also available. The stylish moss colour blends perfectly with the cedar's distinctive silvery colour.
Mortice and Tenon Joints
These cleverly designed joints not only create strength throughout the Victorian Evolution's framework, but also make the greenhouse really simple to install.
Toughened Safety Glass
Being 5 -7 times stronger than horticultural glass, the 3mm toughened safety glass (which is fitted as standard) means that every pane is helping to keep the greenhouse structure rigid.
Optional Aluminium Staging and Shelving
Unusual in a cedar greenhouse the aluminium staging and shelving in the moss green paint finish looks amazing. Unlike timber staging and shelving this will not stain or mark and can be easily wiped clean.

Staging and shelving
This optional sturdy slatted staging is mounted on cantilever brackets to maximise the space available beneath it. It is constructed in aluminium with the Evolution's signature Moss Green powder coated finish.
6'2 wide Evolution models ( Denstone, Eton, and Smallwood ) have 3 slat 20" wide staging available as well as 2 slat 12" wide top shelving.
8'8 wide Evolution models ( Cheltenham, Ellesmere, and Harrow) have 4 slat 20" wide staging available as well as 2 slat 12" wide top shelving.
10'9 wide Evolution models ( Westminster, Oakham, and Lancing) have 4 slat 20" wide staging available as well as 2 slat 12" wide top shelving.
Spandrels
The cast-aluminium Victorian style spandrels are used at the eaves ( as pictured ) and at the ridge to add strength and good looks to what is already a very sturdy construction. Modelled on genuine Victorian designs, these are presented in Moss Green finish.
Display models at GBC
We display Alton Victorians at a number of our 33 display centres around the country so that you can examine for yourself the standard of construction. You can view the beauty of the combination of cedar and moss green aluminium and imagine these buildings in your own back garden ! Check the 'where can I see one' tab at the top RH of this page to find your nearest GBC display model. If there isn't one local to you please keep an eye on the list as we are in the process of installing this building at several more of our display centres as it has proved so popular !
Pictured at our Hertford display centre, this 'Cheltenham' model demonstrates the half-board design; other models feature a dwarf wall or full length glass.
Aluminium external bar capping
This picture shows the optional external moss green finish bar glazing bar capping available for the Alton Victorian. The standard feature is a cedar capping strip which is screwed in place in a similar manner.
Various components of the Victorian are constructed in aluminium as standard... the gutters, the base rail, the ridge cover cap and the finials. It's this combination of aluminium and cedar that makes the Evolution Victorian so distinctive.
Toughened safety glass and guttering
Each Alton Evolution Victorian uses the best materials for the job and the glass is no exception. This is toughened safety glass which is 5 - 7 times stronger than standard horticultural glass and considerably safer. If you manage to break a pane it will shatter into hundreds of fragments like the side window of a car which greatly reduces any chance of injury.
Also in the picture you can see the aluminium gutters which are supplied with a downpipe to fit at one end of the greenhouse.
Ridge spandrels and autovents
The cast aluminium spandrels are fitted at the eaves and ridge on every bay for strength and good looks.
Automatic openers on each vent are included; these open at a temperature ( adjustable ) to help prevent the greenhouse from overheating.
Pictured here on an 8'8 wide 'Cheltenham'.
6 blade louvre window
Every Evolution Victorian has at least one 6 blade louvre included in the kit and larger models have two as standard. You can refer to our technical pages to find out the exact specification. If you need more than the standard number we can provide them as an optional extra.
The louvre is a very useful means of keeping the greenhouse atmosphere and temperature under control: working in conjunction with the roof vents it allows fresh air to circulate through the greenhouse and helps reduce problems such as mildew and damping-off.
Ridge crest and finial
For those not familiar with the terminology the finial is the spiky bit at the end of the greenhouse ! On the Evolution Victorian it is made from cast aluminium and it's included as a standard feature.
The optional cast aluminium ridge cresting ( in moss green ) runs along the ridge and is there for show... it doesn't help your plants to grow ! However, it does add that extra touch of style to what is already a very good looking greenhouse.
Aluminium base
Every Evolution Victorian has an aluminium base finished in the familiar moss green used on all of the aluminium components of this range.
Aluminium will not rust, rot or otherwise deteriorate so it's the ideal material to use for contact with the ground ( or dwarf wall on Eton, Ellesmere and Oakham models ).
Whether your building has cedar panelled low level sections as pictured, full length glazing or sits on a dwarf wall, the principle is exactly the same.
Autolouvre
An automatic opener is available for the louvre windows if required ... a handy way of leaving the ventilation to get on with the job while you are away ! A wax filled cylinder works pneumatically to push open the louvre mechanism.
Pictured here on the same side as the staging just to prove it can go behind the staging if required.
Internal roof blinds for Alton models
This example of Alton's internal roof blinds shows the degree of shading achieved to good effect.
The blinds retract on a sprung top rail.
