The Alton Evolution Cold Frame is made using the same high quality materials and design as all of the Alton Evolution greenhouses.
Each Evolution Cold Frame has mortice and tennon joints. These cleverly designed joints not only create strength throughout the framework but also make the cold frame really simple to install. 3mm toughend safety glass is suplied as standard.
Normally a wooden cold frame will have it's glass held in place with a beading or groove, cut into the wood. The result of this can lead to the glass rattling in the frame. The Alton Evolution new bar capping system uses the toughened glass as part of the cold frames overall strength by gripping the glass tightly against the frame. This prevents the glass from rattling and gives the cold frame a more rigid structure than some other models. This fantastic system means you can have a virtually maintenance-free cedar cold frame! The stylish moss colour also blends perfectly with the cedar's distinctive silvery colour.
The easy-to-open sliding and hinged lids can be propped open as and when you need, giving your plants plenty of ventillation.
When growing plants from seeds in your greenhouse (or if you buy small seedlings) you will normally need to harden the young plants off before planting them out in the garden. By moving a young plant from a warm greenhouse and planting it straight outside into a cold atmosphere, the seedling can become damaged from such a sudden change. This shock will stunt the plants growth and can delay fruit and flower crops.
The idea of hardening plants off is that you gradually introduce the young plants to a change of temperature over a period of time. To start with, you will want to pop the young plants in the cold frame during the day and pop them back into the greenhouse at night - until they are strong enough to be planted out.
